Puccini, picnic and possums

By Angela Cuming and Emily Sherlock January 29, 2006

“] More than 100,000 people filled The Domain for the event. Most staked out the best vantage spots early and spread out chairs, cushions and rugs to get comfortable for the evening. Gourmet picnic feasts were on the menu for most groups, with their sliced fruit and cheeses, dips and bread being eyed greedily by the hungry possums that call The Domain home. The crowd was treated to a performance of Madame Butterfly by soprano Elena Prokina and Australian tenor Rosario La Spina. [ ] Opera Australia chief executive Adrian Collette said the annual event was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy time with family and friends. "Opera in The Domain is a great event for the Sydney community," he said. The annual concert began in 1982 with a striking performance of La Traviata, conducted by Richard Bonynge and starring Joan Sutherland. The free event has been hailed by critics as not only a world-class showcase of musical talent, but a way of opening up the seemingly high-brow world of opera to the masses. Most of the audience last night were young people whose budgets would not usually stretch to tickets for an Opera House performance.”

“The singing is, if anything, better than ever. Elena Prokina, out of Russia sung the title role with a warm, gripping intensity[“
